When Dorothy Dandridge and Harry Belafonte ‘Showed Up’ at the REDCAT

The iconic Dorothy Dandridge and Harry Belafonte (he needs no introduction) came alive in Los Angeles at the REDCAT at the Walt Disney Concert Hall complex during the Rock My Soul Festival recently featuring the screening of the famous 1954 movie, Carmen Jones.

As a tribute to Ms. Dandridge, mezzo-soprano J’Nai Bridges backed on the piano by Doug Peck set the tone for the evening with an electrifying performance that got the audience on their feet at the end. Ms. Bridges did not disappoint. Her voice was sultry, seductive and had a gentle power which prepared the audience for an intimate evening.

The show was part of an event “Celebrating Women Artists in Collaboration and the Community”. Rock My Soul curated by celebrated filmmaker Ava DuVernay.  Also on the rooster the previous night was a sold-out performance by award-winning singer/songwriter, bassist and composer, Meshell Ndegeocello.
